Steel & Tube

Steel & Tube were sued by the government for non-compliance and could not sell products; evidence of compliance was stored in 80 Excel files using multiple measurement types and formats; in under two weeks we enabled S&T to prove their steel products were compliant and sales resumed.

Situation

Steel & Tube had a legal requirement to comply with government standards on steel manufacturing. Unfortunately, the evidence of compliance was stored in 80 Excel files using multiple measurement types and 80 different formats.

Steel & Tube were sued by the government for non-compliance and more importantly, they could not sell some valuable products.

Approach

Time was of the essence as the inability to sell promised products was affecting customer relationships and downstream customer productivity. Occam very quickly learned the required business process while simultaneously unifying the 80 Excel files into a unified and standardized information system.

In under two weeks, Steel &  Tube were back in front of the Commerce Commission using the unified data to prove their steel products were compliant, and sales resumed.

Outcome

Steel & Tube have been using the Occam data framework to manage compliance for eight years. The standard has completely changed during that time, and Occam has very cost effectively kept up with the new standard. Steel & Tube has also developed new products and business processes, and the Occam data framework has readily kept up with those changes.

Steel & Tube continue to be the leading supplier for earthquake standard steel in New Zealand.
